Barnes CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Mon 31 Aug 2020 at 13.00
RNVR Cricket Club Lost 36 runs
Match report
In this oddest of summers, we had a rearranged Bank Holiday Monday game to keep everyone on their toes (too much for the skipper who, despite it being his idea, had to send multiple e-mails and rebook the lunch table having got stuck with Sundays). He then proceeded to lose the toss and Foulds decided (mostly swayed by hangover levels) that Barnes would bat and he would sleep.
On a pitch offering uneven bounce (both up and down), Hylton and Vinay opened up and both produced excellent opening spells, helped by a couple of sharp catches from Colin at slip, removing 4 of Barnes' top 5 with not many on the board. They were replaced by Tex, who bowled one of the more miserly spells, being hit for a total of 5 runs in 7 overs (only 2 scoring shots) and claiming a further 2 wickets in the process, and Rob Paterson who was similarly miserly without success. However, Barnes, via a few slices of luck and the usual drops, recovered and though Alex Beard chipped away with a couple more wickets, what turned out to be match-winning 9th wicket partnership of 80 both frustrated and took the game away from us. Hylts returned to finally break the partnership, proceeded to drop Foulds first ball to miss out on his 5-fer (jug avoidance) and was smote for 6 before Barnes declared at 167 for 9, at least 50 more than they should have got.
In reply, the RNVR were soon 28 for 4, with 4 of the top 5 not reaching double figures. There was brief rally with Massey (18), Rob P (15) and Alex B (37) hitting some lusty blows whilst (just) avoiding the local 6 and out rule at one end, however, the nature of the pitch meant there was always a delivery with your name on it and wickets continued to tumble with Alex the last man out as the RNVR were all out for 131.
Only a few weeks after 292 vs 283 down the road against LTCC, less than 300 combined runs in 80 overs, maybe we should stick to Sundays.
