Blindley Heath CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 13.00
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report 35 overs
Debut at Blindley Heath, who are open to both Saturday and Sunday cricket, playing no league. No bar inthe clubhouse, but excellent pub (RED BARN) very close. We also had a pint in the Greyhound in Lingfield afterwards.

Skipper Crichton's calf kept him away but Nick Priddle assumed the captaincy with ease and elegance, after a slightly rearranged detour from Gatwick with his childhood neighbour Matt Upton. They weren't the last to arrive as Francis was keenly working the brai in Cuckfield to feed has family thinking it was a Sunday game, and Tom who firmly believed that I'd been joking about 1pm.

Lost the toss, and as both sides wanted to bat, we field.
Pepler and Skipper Prids opened with the now ridiculously rebuilt Potter backing them up as first change. Harry Eastman, now 20% older than when last seen at the Ditchling 200th anniversary game nearly stole the show and after a 5 runs an over start and 103 run partnership for the second wicket the mid innings acceleration failed to materialise and a 35 over innings was closed at 168 for 9

A rough plan to allow all the front line bats a chance to get their eye in before tour in a fortnight didn't completely work. Reza completed the warm up with 4 fours to reach 50 and a retirement, but earlier Paul Ford fresh from back surgery this week was not completely at one with a slower paced attack. Upton and Priddle smote with joy and panache, Skipper Prids clearly feeling he'd seen enough balls to feel good about the season falling LBW attempting his second reverse sweep.

The bats who clearly took the opportunity to impress the selectors ahead of tour were Hardman and Hillman. Both had long knocks and were hitting the ball cleanly by the end, Tom his third equal highest score in 23 years and best for five years and Tim against fresher bowlers battled hard to hit a 3 season highest and find the middle with regularity.

Tom, gallant as ever, got out in time for Anthony Eastman to join his son at the crease to push for the finish. After a couple of moments of calm, which in the last 5 overs did make the sun drenched spectators, now including family Ford too for the second week (hurrah), sightly nervous, a flurry of runs and towering vertical fours from Eastman senior saw us home with an over to spare.

Given that BH play friendlies on both Saturday and Sunday there was just a whiff of excitement at the thought of some two day frolics............
