Scorecard

Cuckfield CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sat 31 Jul 1948 at 2.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report This scorecard hangs at Arthur's home, a gift at the 50th anniversary game in 1998.

At the end of the uploading of scorecards RNVR entered a conversation with CCC, and President, Geoffrey Longfield, offered some further context - reproduced here, the first game, for convenience:

"You (PV) suggest that there was some delay in the fixture being made part of Cricket Week. This is not so and no slight was intended! The revival of Cricket Week after the war was as follows:

1948 and 1949. For the first two years the RNVR fixture was on the last Saturday in July. There were also matches on the Bank Holiday Monday and v Incogniti on the following Friday (the Committee agreed this mid-week fixture on the basis that the Club Captain Ivor Ingall took on full responsibility for the game).

1950. The RNVR fixture was on 5/8 the Saturday beginning the Bank Holiday weekend. The 1950 Fixture Card is the first to refer to “Cricket Week” with fixtures on the Mon,Tues, Wed and Saturday.

1951 Hooray - RNVR appear on the Wednesday of Cricket Week. Our Wednesday XI had an away game on the same day.

1952-1955. Presumably CCC could not manage two games on the same day so RNVR returned to the Wednesday Fixtures with a 2pm start. No mention of Cricket Week.

1956-1958. RNVR appear in both 1st XI and Wed XI fixtures with a 2pm start brought forward to 11.30 am in 1958.. No mention of “Cricket Week” till 1958 although there were also a Thursday fixture v Wigmore in I956/7 and Guys Hospital in 1958 and on the Friday Hampton Wick Royal in 1957/8.

1959. Full Cricket Week with 11.30am start every day – including 1958 I calculate that 2021 will be the 64th game without a change. Who said that Fixture Secretaries don’t like change?

You will gather from the above that Cricket Week for us means all-day games and although run by senior members as Captains any member can play. When run by the Wed XI the members who played regularly on a Wednesday got preference. I stand to be corrected by Tim Peacock who skippered the Wednesday XI from 1955-57. However I am happy to agree that R NVR have been in Cricket Week for at least 70 years"

Geoffrey Longfield offered the following after a lunch at the Army & Navy Club in July 2022:

1. In 1948 the match was on Sat 31st August, Cricket Week starting on the following Monday.
2. The fixture continued on the same Saturday in 1949 and 1950.
3. In 1951 the fixture was moved to the following Wednesday but was shown in our card as a fixture for the Wednesday XI and not part of Cricket Week. Similarily in 1952/3/4/5/6.
4. A full Cricket Week was arranged in 1957, all with an 11.30am start except the RNVR game on Wed 7/8 which started at 2.30. This later time was a sop to those regular Wednesday XI players who would have worked till lunchtime.
5. From 1958 the Cricket Week fixtures were shown separately although strangely the RNVR game was included in both the Cricket Week and the Wednesday XI.
6. The Wednesday XI ceased to exist at the end of the 1959 season.
