Match report The day dawned damp and ominous after plenty of rain across the UK in the previous 24hrs. However, the micro climate south of the North Downs ensured the fixture ensued and despite not being able to play the usual full-day game with accompanying lengthy liquid lunch on the field, it was suggested that we all meet at 12 for drinks and a snack lunch which was hugely enjoyed by all. With the warmth of good red wine and port in their bellies and a sun promising to make an appearance, Skippers Phillips and Norman then proceeded to the greener-than-usual wicket for the coin toss, duly won by OCC who decided to bat and a 40 over format was agreed upon.

RNVR engineered an excellent start in the field - sensational bowling by Vinay (his usual extremely economical self), Ed Jnr (who bowled with a tweaked thigh muscle), Frano (first ball wicket, great catch by Rob P), Rob (ridiculously controlled), Ed Snr (turned it more than Shane Warne!) and Mike S (unenviable death bowling) and managed to bowl them all out for 187 off 38.4 overs - and that was with the tale-enders streakily putting on 40-odd. Great bowling and fielding performance - only a solitary dropped catch. It would be remiss not to mention Jono’s significant contribution behind the stumps too - he took 2 very sharp catches (standing up to both Frano and Mike - no mean feat), a stumping off Ed Snr (again no mean feat considering how much it was turning) and a run out (in tandem with some slick fielding from Mike). A direct hand in 4 wickets is pretty impressive - small wonder we had them all out under par and they didn’t bat all their overs out.

Rez and Phillips struggled with the bat to get things off to a quick start but the OCC openers bowled well. Mike S (42) and Dickie then opened it up and hit some monster balls into the woods - great to watch as the sun finally made an appearance and it turned into a magic evening for cricket. The game was brought home by sensational knocks from Charlie (53no) and Ed Jnr (41no), brilliant hitting off a pretty tricky wicket.

Another very memorable day out was topped off with beers and a BBQ hosted by OCC. Huge thanks to them for another excellent day’s fun and thanks to everyone who helped us bring back another good win - that’s 4 from the last 5 years there. Think they might draft even more 1’s youngsters into the team next year!
