RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 10 runs

Match report First match of the COVID affected 2020 season
40 over game, Skippered by Bridges.

"Everything is good"

As Colin observed. All bowlers should be respected regardless of Gender or Age. "Old men and Boys" no more. RNVR undone by two sussex siblings aged 15 & 14.
It was Asha Hinley's first 5-for in adult cricket, she modestly told me. Oh, say I, recognising a prompt when I hear one, Have you played much adult cricket?
I'm 14, she replied.

The long wait for cricket yielded a great game. Sure, specifics were rusty and the battle of the umpires to outdo each other in kindness and sympathy ended in symmetry. Keeper Ford who had assumed that Colin had his Dad standing at his end when he was bowling found himself 10th man out, also LBW, also to a spinner. But as we all know, Ford is rarely knowingly out LBW.
We had hygiene breaks every six overs - players hurriedly rushing up for a hand wipe and a disinfection of the ball, and to hear the dying moments of the unwatched test at Southampton. But the scorer had long turned that off to both better concentrate (fail) and enjoy (big tick) the game played in real time in front of him.

A long and respectful lecture about COVID rules was given, pitch had been relayed and unused and the RNVR missed out on a first bat.

Francis Potter has had two RNVR careers. With such a binary thing one might expect one to have been better than the other. His early years under skipper Vacher yielded 27 wickets at 20.5, his latter fewer, and for more. But at Lindfield with the guidance of a great skipper, supportive field settings and the new ball he backed up Hylts at the other end and served Colin well with his third best bowling in 18 seasons, and his best for 15.
Ed Hawkins, temporarily returned from Sweden for lock down, performed with all the energy and skill he's known for - and it was uplifted the whole side
But here's the stat. The RNVR only had only 3 over 50 (who scored 10), and 4 under 32 (who scored 144)!

Two debutants - HURRAH - from Charterhouse, despite our never having actually played there to recruit them. Max bowled an over so long it nearly redefined time and space. It may easily have become a timeless thing, rendering limited overs cricket irrelevant. That said to bowl 7 no balls, all for height of bounce, does actually bode rather well that he might scare the stuffing out of batsmen when his radar is fixed. His 40 runs were taken at a speed which if compared to food consumption would have led to indigestion, and in so doing set a new second wicket partnership, with Laurie, at Lingfield.

Not to be outdone, Arun Nayak bowled a good spell, removing (blinding catch Tom Hillman) Lindfield's best bat (The Sussex U15 Captain) and with soft hands Ford (1 bye all afternoon) easily taking his 126th club catch. Later at the crease himself, he and Ford powered past the former -all Massey- 9th wicket record to raise it to 19. Skipper Ford now holds 8th, 9th and 10th wickets at Lindfield

Skipper Bridges was, as ever, unlucky; with no batsman ever actually knowing where the ball might go. The wicket was a good one and 178 should not have been enough.

That it was is down to the excellent spin bowling of the Hinleys. It could have been so different. Laurie was unlucky to get out. Who scores 50 and reduces their average? The weight of his shots saw many travel at the slowest possible speed to evade fielders and reach the boundary. It was a master class of timing and ease. Reza on the other hand was in a great hurry. Half season without a good pie and he really wanted first dibs at the buffet. Out: Gluttony.

At 81 for 1 with Laurie and Max cruising all looked fine, at 128 for 2 with Ed revving and Laurie purring it was OK, but collapses happen. They don't usually involve Colin. (He did get one other duck at Leigh in 2014), and at 149 for 8 it was another game.
Arun and Fordie tried to steer us home and got us to within spitting distance (which is illegal BTW - a level 4 offence - please look it up - I can't explain)

No beers in the pavillon so the RNVR hosted a sole host in the Red Lion, which like the Bent Arms has a big garden, and we seemed to have stayed at a safe distance from each other all day.

It's good to be back.
