Match report
SUSSEX TOUR DAY 2 (Rottingdean) - Brighton Baywatch
A wet and windy Monday morning in Sussex greeted the RNVR as we awoke from our Ditchling hangover to face Rottingdean down on the South Coast. For pre-match warm-up, the R decided a trip down to Rottingdean beach was in order, whereby Tom Hillman decided to give the coastguards a job to do by swimming out to the buoys and then having to be rescued by boogie board. Having re-created a few scenes from Baywatch, the R finally headed up to the ground (via a swift one at The Plough) to start the game, albeit not before the skipper picked up his car having had a few “presents” left all over his back windscreen courtesy of a Vindaloo-eating pigeon.
The toss ensued and the R chose to bat on a seemingly lovely deck as the sun broke out. What followed, was not quite as bad as Ireland, but nearly as bad as England, as the swinging ball accounted for 6 RNVR batsmen in the first 10 overs. 32-6 off 10 looked worrying. As the pitch began to spin, Foulds dug in, ably accompanied by Frano, who put together a solid 50 partnership for the 7th wicket to bring us to an air of respectability. Universe Tom (the white Chris Gayle), resplendent in bandana and club tie around his head, then added a quick cameo eight with his new bat. As the spinners took hold, Ford finally decided hitting the ball onto his own stumps was the only way to put us out of our misery, all out 101, with Foulds carrying his bat for 49* (classic jug avoidance again, clearly a theme for the tour).
With nothing to lose, the RNVR followed up a fine tea, fired up and ready to skittle Rottingdean for a double digit score. Alas, their openers had different ideas as using an incredibly straight and correct technique muscled their way to 40-0 off the opening 10 overs. A fine run-out from gully by Alex East broke the opening partnership, and we sensed an opening. An LBW from Peps and an excellent bowled from Bertie threatened hope, but sadly Rottingdean knocked off the remaining runs 3 down for a comfortable win.
