Match report
Sunday 18 Aug 2019
40 Overs Each (Reduced by Rain)
RNVR Lost by 37 Runs
After last year's win and fantastic day out, expectations were again very high on arrival at the lovely forested Outwood CC ground. Hopes were soon dashed though as the heavens opened and it bucketed down heavily. As conditions worsened, coffees and beers were consumed and plans were made to show the Lord's Ashes Test on the screen inside before the weather soon reached London and similarly washed that fixture out too. Even with the covers on, very disappointingly, it looked for all money as if the outfield would be too wet and the game would have to written off.
Amazingly though, and just as suddenly, the sun appeared and worked it's magic to dry out the Surrey hills. A shortened 40 over format was decided on and to keep things interesting, the skippers decided to delay the toss until after the customary port- and red-wine-filled lunch and the speeches for one of the RNVR's oldest and most enjoyable fixtures. The recent tradition of taking lunch on the field in the sun ensued and the ladies outdid themselves offering up superb plates of delicious food and a fantastic crumble and custard to follow. The warming glow of sun and wine made it a truly memorable occasion.
Finally though, cricket beckoned and after losing the toss, RNVR were put into the field. Vinay and Phillips opened the bowling, Vinay proving his usual very economical self but without a bowling partner the other side to sustain the pressure (possibly fuelled by too much good red wine and port at lunch!). Unable to make the initial break-through, the services of newcomer Matt Dryden and James Bamford were called upon and proved inspired - Matt taking 2 wickets in quick succession (a hat-trick ball ensued) and James 1.
The Outwood opening bat, A. Middleton, was equal to the task though and soon went to his 50. This called for drastic action from the skipper who called up the real RNVR attack of Bridges and Vacher Snr which again yielded results - each of them taking 2 wkts a piece and bowling superbly and ably assisted by Ben Dale. Unfortunately, again Middleton was up to it and raced to a well-crafted 100 with some help from the lower order and Outwood posted a credible total of 222 for 8 off their 40 overs.
After an energising tea, and with a very strong RNVR batting line-up to come, hopes were again high that we could pull off a good win within the allotted overs. The reality was somewhat different unfortunately and Outwood's bowling attack seemed to have improved significantly with good areas and pace. 3 early wickets put RNVR on the back foot before Colin Bridges stabilised things at the crease and smashed a quick-fire 28 to get things back to par.
After a couple more quick wickets, Matt Dryden and the skipper Phillips managed to put together a decent partnership with some huge hits from Matt in his 33 getting RNVR back into the game. Outwood then brought back their strike bowler, Matt Norman, who took 2 quick wickets (including a hat-trick shout turned down), ebbing the game away from RNVR once more. Enter Ben Dale, the batsman up the RNVR's sleeve, who with some very effortless big-hitting managed to build a good partnership with Phillips and put the game back within reach.
Very unfortunately, it was not to be and the RNVR fell some 37 runs short despite Phillips' 57 not out. Another fantastic day out played in great spirit and plenty of fun had by both hosts and visitors. RNVR can hopefully emulate 2018's win in 2020 and look forward to it!
