Headley CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 07 Jul 2019 at 13.30
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 123 runs
Match report
In a fixture that hasn't seen the RNVR get a winning result since records began (the website only goes back to 2008!), things did not look hopeful when teams arrived and congregated around a soggy wicket with a damp outfield.
However....the sun came out and play managed to get underway only 30 minutes behind schedule and after a lost toss, the RNVR went out to bat.
Upon opening the batting it was not long before Reza went about dismantling their opening bowling attack reaching a quick fire 50 (scoring 19 off 1 over!)
The run rate slowed a little after Reza's retirement at 50 but runs were still being accumulated with contributions from Pridds (28) and Mike Saunders adding a watchful 50. This strong foundation allowed the lower middle order to play some attacking strokes, notably Charlie Crichton with 45 and a Hylts 21* and Vinay 18 ( given out with yet another unlucky umpiring call).
Wickets fell towards the end but all in the search for runs as the RNVR finished with 224/4 off their 35 overs - not bad considering we were put in on a soggy track!
Headley however is not an easy ground to defend (as history has shown) so there was no resting of laurels.
In defence of the runs, it was seen that spin was the call of the day and the plan worked with Ben Dale, who opened the bowling took a wicket in his 2nd over.
Then came the Vache attack...Piers taking 4 wickets in a destructive spell of off spin. Most noticeably an excellent delivery that turned considerably, so much so that the left-handed bat could only edge to a waiting and watchful Ben Dale at first slip. Piers, despite being given 2 other spells in an effort to get the allusive 5-fer, it was not to be in what some are suggesting was some serious jug avoidance. However, he did end with figures of 8 overs 4/13!
With Headley's top order ripped out, it then time for the rest of the bowling attack to chip in. Ed Hewens picking up a couple and Ben Dale coming back to pick up another, restricting Headley to 105/9 off their 35 overs, with spin responsible for all 9 wickets!
So a comprehensive win by 123 runs and back to winning ways for the RNVR at Headley!
