Reigate Pilgrims CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 23 Jun 2019 at 11.30
RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 48 runs

Match report Traditionally the all day mid-June jewel in the RNVR crown at Reigate Pilgrims means we're inserted on a damp pitch, 30 for 4 at lunch, see away a few bottles of port and are bundled out for c100 about an hour later. However, new regime, new approach and with both teams struggling for numbers on the Thursday a later 1pm start was agreed and with both teams eventually rustiling up 11, the RNVR actually won the toss and elected to field. Hylton and Davinder opened up, the former enjoying the downhill and slope away from the right hander, the latter keeping it full and straight - they didn't score a run until the 5th over and there were numerous plays and misses without reward.

Accurate bursts by newbies Will W-D and Dom Sherry followed and finally yielded 3 wickets at an equally miserly rate, including a proper swing in, nip away back up the slope, caught behind that almost looked Grade 3 from Will and Dom proving the subtle art of bowling at the stumps remains effective. Skipper Massey turned to himself (with broken finger after getting in the way of one too many at cover) and for the first time in 7 years, James "JR/Bridget" Richards. Still bristling in off a 20 yard run-up but without the arm velocity to get it much further than 20 yards, JR's first ball induced a leading/top/back of the bat edge 'Please f****ng catch it' went the cry, alas dropped (only one of the day). Welcome back, some things never change. 3 overs later he was cooked, pulling himself from the attack - by September it'll be 8 in a row up the hill.

Massey finally removed Kanagarajah having starved him of any leg-side hitting for about half an hour, before double bowling changes to Piers' tweak and a returning Hylton took removed another 4 thanks to another Prids' stumping (one bail please), an exceptionally calm Davinder catch and a more surprising Frano one. Reigate declared at 170 for 8 off nearly 49 overs of toil.

The less said about the batting, probably the better - Pilgrims have rustled up a Surrey U17 player who opened the batting and the bowling (and probably made the tea) - he proved a bit sharp down the hill removing Will W-D early, whilst Wood bowled unchanged up the hill for 10 overs proving miserly and accurate also skittling Piers. Two periods of consolidation between Prids and CC, before the former nicked off (he was out 3 times in all really) and the latter left a straight one, and then Dom and Hylton followed but with nobody topping 25, we always looked a bit short.

So new regime, still bundled out for just over 100 just without the port and at least we bowled and fielded well.
