Cookham Dean CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 19 May 2019 at 13.30
RNVR Cricket Club Won by 59 runs

Match report Post our early season success at Eton, the second game of 2019 presented skipper Priddle with an unusual RNVR dilemma - 17 players available! Having managed to whittle it down to a chosen XI inevitably there was still time for some last-minute drama – cry offs and dark clouds amassing on Saturday were not going to make for a comfortable night! Thankfully Prid’s late night, red wine induced, fears for the weather did not materialise, and we arrived at Cookham Dean on a slightly overcast, but not unpleasant afternoon.

A 40 over game was decided upon and having been told by the opposition captain that they had out ‘a bit of scratch side’ (welcome to our world!), Prids won the toss and decided to have a bat. A brave decision given that half his intended top order hadn’t yet arrived!

Jono and Fergs appeared unperturbed and set about their task with real purpose and some vigour. Fergie’s first five scoring shots all being boundaries and a punchy run rate of six an over from the first 10 overs. As ex-skipper Ford will tell you, Cookham Dean is ‘a batting paradise’, ‘a road’ etc, etc and we’ve all spent far too many hours searching for balls in the field there that have been dispatched by any number of Cookham Dean batsmen over the years, so were reluctant to get ahead of ourselves. The president decided to test the batsmen’s concentration by releasing his dog to charge across the pitch – “he was fine until they decided to hit the ball towards him!”, but even this failed to break their resolve.

The partnership of 90 lasted until the 16th over when Fergs was eventually bowled for 35 bringing Prids to the crease and, if anything, the run rate was upped. With Jono, steadily accumulating runs at the other end, Prids reached his half century, however was bowled shortly after this for 51 in the 30th over. The score was on 205, Jono in the nineties, and closing in on another century. This was duly reached when he retired five overs later on 103 including 14 fours and one six – a great knock! The RNVR batted out their overs amassing a very respectable total of 273-3, however as I mentioned before, we all know what can happen at Cookham Dean.

Post tea, the Richardson brothers came out to open the batting for the opposition and it didn’t take long for all those memories to coming flooding back as James Richardson deposited the RNVR bowling attack to all corners of the ground. The president, now installed in scorebox always relishes quick scoring though, particularly with a digital scoreboard to deal with as well as the book! It was a tough opening salvo for Hylts and Dav but they stuck to their guns.

With Cookham Dean accumulating runs at seven an over, the skipper sensed that the initial decoration of slips would be better employed sweeping in deep! On a slow track a lot of shots were played on the up and you always thought there was a chance though, and Alex Beard, fielding at square leg, very nearly pulled off an impressive acrobatic diving catch.

Prids turned to the spin duo of Massey and Dale to try and break the deadlock. Finally, RNVR got the breakthrough in 17th over when Crichton caught James Richardson for 84 off Dale (and yes, for those asking, Fergs did lose his house on that catch!). The old adage of one brings two came about and RNVR quickly took another wicket, Beard catching the number three bat off Dale, and Massey getting in on the act, having the other Richardson caught at cover point by Crichton. The last time CC caught two catches at Cookham Dean he dropped the third to lose us the match, breaking his finger in the process – the omens still weren’t good!

However, this time it was to prove different, Alex Beard taking a caught and bowled in his second over. Giles Sutcliffe was brought into the attack and quickly had the dangerous number five out lbw, Prids took a stumping off him and Dav a great catch at square leg, albeit there was some debate as to whether the ‘splint’ on his left hand actually constituted a baseball mit!?! Dale returned to take a couple more wickets, and but for dropping a caught and bowled, could’ve had a five for! Laurie was called upon for the final over and took the last Cookham wicket, his first for the RNVR, another stumping (well technically a run out)! Cookham Dean all out for 214, 59 runs short.

Beers were enjoyed afterwards, and talk quickly turned to the next match against the LTCC which is really set to test club loyalties. It was all too much for the president who headed to the Peking Inn for the traditional Cookham post-match Chinese, however even this had a twist with the requirement for a vegetarian option producing ‘mock duck’! Fordy, honestly, you’ll love it…
