RNVR Cricket Club Lost by 205 runs

Match report A celebration of the RPCC 70th anniversary the fixture secretaries concocted a 'test match', or at the very least a two innings match.
Sadly while RPCC were able to maintain the same side over the two days the RNVR fielded two largely different sides. Rob Burnside's skippers innings on the Saturday was effectively the difference between the sides and the unusually flaccid RNVR collapse meant the contest was over as a two innings affair.
The RNVR stayed with the skipper that evening if beds were needed and we hosted the hosts to a bbq as their own 70th dinner hadn't quite got off the ground. This was complicated by Mrs Vacher already hosting a dinner party at home and so two groups skirted around each other, 20 or so cricketers and 4 couples. I still blame Will Wingfield Digby as he was due to have debuted for the RNVR that day (and was a guest at supper), but as it was the two tables did not know each other at all. Matters were turned hysterical when Will offered a cricketer a Gin and Tonic and was roundly chastised by his hostess for talking to someone who wasn't at their party. Magnums of red soothed fractured nerves.
Tom Hillman announced at breakfast that he'd never woken up up in the middle of a game of cricket before. As true for him as it was for many of us, but did leave him, personally, a tad open to the retort, "Sometimes you never do Tom".
As club skipper over a decade before I'd tried not to let anyone ever get a 5-for, another irritating habit of mine that made the batsmen think that they are the heroes. On day two at RPCC I relaxed that attitude and allowed - neigh demanded - that both did. On Saturday I, as skippers for generations have done, relied on the best bowler - and used him too late.
