THE NERVOUS NINE
The omens weren’t good as we pulled into the The Bell at Outwood for our customary pre-match pint and team talk. Ex-skipper Vacher was already there enjoying a glass of beer with his neighbour before assuring us that he was not playing as he had a prior ‘Top Gear commiseratory lunch engagement’. Hillman appeared brandishing a book of Plato’s poems and match manager Staples informed us that he was off games due to a back injury sustained in his yoga class! To add insult to injury the pub then informed us that they don’t serve sandwiches on a Sunday, prompting Mr Hardman to opt for a sportsman’s salad and a bowl of chips, whilst not content with kebabs on the previous two evenings, Crichton decided to go the full house with a kofte (or dog turd as Fordy kindly remarked). It was the arrival of little and large Ford (Hamish now towering over his pint-sized father) that did at least bring a semblance of cricketing ability/promise to aforementioned gathering. This was supported by the sight of Hylton practising his bowling in the nets on arrival at the ground.
Unlike the previous week’s fixture, the opposition represented a far more accurate Sunday side of ‘old men and boys’ much to the relief of the under-powered RNVR. On being put into the field, Outwood kindly offered the visiting team a pair of rolling sub fielders. George was tossed the ball for the first over and despite his previous outing in St Albans looked very early season. He proceeded to spray it all over the place, bowling a ten ball over, extras quickly establishing himself as the top scorer. Taylor blamed the lack of alcohol in his system for his waywardness, having been on the wagon post his stag do excesses in Dublin the previous weekend, a pleaded with the captain to take him off! It was thus left to the South African navy to carry the can for the visitors. Hylton bowling eleven overs solid from the road end supported by Frano who replaced George at the other end. It soon became apparent that Hylton had not been given the Speedo initiation talk on debut at Lindfield last year, however with the RNVR keeper and slip cordon acting like a leaking sieve than a ring of steel he soon cottoned onto bowling at the stumps being the best course of action!
The unchanged Hylton at the road end proceeded to take a fivefer (all top five batsmen) ably supported by Frano and latterly Hamish Ford who was unlucky not to take more than one wicket given the amount of rip and turn he was giving it from the other end. As soon as the colts started coming in to bat, skipper Vaughan manfully brought himself on to bowl to replace Hylton! A juggled catch from George (still dreaming of the previous weekend’s Guinness) and a good catch to remove the opposition captain from one of our borrowed fielders soon had Outwood eight wickets down. Having reverted to ‘spin’ for the kids, who would have been terrified by his pace, Vaughan was despatched first ball for six by one of Outwood’s 13 year olds. He tried to repeat the feat second ball but this time hit it straight into the hands of Crichton at square leg who rather relieved having just been told by the umpire that this child played for Surrey colts by the umpire took a low catch. The deadly spin duo of Crichton and Hardman were then called upon wrap the innings up. Outwood’s top scorer reached his fifty with a four off Crichton before being stumped by Ford the following ball – all out for 171.
Post tea the RNVR response came in the form of Hardman and Hamish. Tiger Tim didn’t manage to take much of the shine off the ball being bowled for a duck in the first over bringing Ford and Ford to fray with Lynn watching on. Hamish decided that running was over-rated, or perhaps he just had knowledge of his father’s run out reputation, and proceeded to score his runs in fours before departing and bringing Taylor to the wicket. With his trusty Solly bat newly taped up George went about his batting in a slightly more ordered fashion than he had his bowling. He soon found himself running out of partners though, as Ford departed, and Crichton’s stay at the crease was equally short lived. Cometh the hour cometh the man, fuelled by Plato, Hillman stepped into the breach. A worthy partner for Taylor, playing the ball with his customary late style and despatching a beautifully timed four through the covers. Momentarily the flow of wickets seemed to have been stemmed before Hillman himself fell on his sword, allowing the skipper to become Taylor’s foil. Rupert and George pushed the runs along nicely as RNVR began to approach the target total. However, there was still time for a final wobble, as Taylor was out for 65, leaving Rupert and Hylton to bring us home with ten odd overs to spare and Potter not required to swing the bat in anger. 174-6 and a four, well two wicket victory (given we only had nine batsmen)!
Piers arrived for his customary post-match glass of beer, tried to persuade Fordy to come back with him to Vacher towers. Tim decided to round the day off by stepping in dog shit and wiping it all over the Fiesta’s passenger mat, making for a slightly more fragrant journey home than I might have liked, prior to our bank holiday Sunday night curry!
