Match report
Leigh vs RNVR

Leigh 207 for 4 (Cox 116 not out)
RNVR 175 for 9 (Delaney 67 not out, Dale 43)
Leigh won by 32 runs.
The 'Fortunate' Mr Dale
If you'd checked the hollows and hedges of Leigh you'd have found no evil gremlins, no ogres and certainly no trolls. Nearly all malevolent spirits that had blighted the unfortunate Mr Dale hitherto this season were banished.
Only the weight of expectation would test his soaring ambition.
In a game limited to 35 overs per side (history may ignore this fact and declare the game drawn), we were denied the complexities that full day cricket matches against Leigh bought a decade ago; would we be all out by lunch or would the boiled potatoes get us?
The Chenery cousins look to have aged well, a fresh generation plays golf off 4 and fielded very very well, and there was no Mark Hollman to tease unwary batsmen, but as a democratically appointed side Ford's 2010 XI can get out to anyone and nearly proved it. Only Paul "Watto" Watson finished wicketless, or technically so, as he did remove Speedman while the latter was umpiring. Can anyone imagine a more ironic dismissal?
In fairness it all started well. We won the lunch, with nearly all hands on deck at the slippery dolphin in Betchworth. Never easy to read the fixture card from there though.
And even when we came second in the toss and were invited not to bat (which we were always going to do anyway at some point) there were the usual flurry of straight balls that hit batsmen plumb in front, usually bowled by Speedman (umpire Watson). Delaney looking no older than his last appearance a decade ago, when he could run, bowled a fine assortment off a few paces, that even Paul Ford was undercapable of stopping. One should mention that Speedman was congratulated on his spell which he erroneously thought had cost 11 runs, but it was really only 10. Fancy not being able to count to 10! Silly Jonathan.
The fortunate Mr Dale had no need of an umpire when he finished his spell with a wicket maiden. You can only make this stuff up in limited overs cricket and the RNVR. Fancy having your spell end on a wicket maiden. (Speedo obviously would love to).
Massey A (the closest the RNVR will ever get to a jump jet) proved the do-or-die nature of the fixture (he only bowls in our league encounters I learn) by combining line and length in a way that league captains must love. Davinder probably earnt the John Lewis award for not being knowingly overbowled. His season is young and is unlikely not to get better.
All of which mayhem meant we'd allowed an opener to carry his bat and to get a ton and only incrementally added to our missed catches tally (bring back the Claw, Nigel Crawford and Charlie Crichton please).
Skipper Ford announced serious intent by opening the batting and once he'd recovered from the shock Mr Hardman prepared to join him at number 7. Cricket is a fickle friend. Only two weeks earlier Tim had made a very fine score, some 16 times higher in fact than his skipper, and I, for one, was proud to say the best I'd ever seen (Tim's not Paul's). Now he gets dropped down the order.
Likewise Massey J appeared to get vertigo along with Vice Vaughan at the top of the list. Bill might well have suffered vertigo too, but as he had worn an eyepatch for the entire game (due an optic edge the day before) there's likely an easier explanation for his dismissal.
So much dear skipper for tampering with the order. Skipper's best decision was to be blowing his nose at square leg when a particularly cruel ball managed to beat The Unfortunate Mr Dale and gave plausible cheer to the side looking for a stumping. The A road to Fortunate was open again, and the car raced on.
Little need be said of Delaney and Dale batting together. The 87 partnership in 14 overs was the only time of glee we truly had and that was when Speedo wandered off I think. Their 110 combined runs included 21 occasions when they actually ran. Between them there was one "2" scored. But predictably the tail could not match their successful pace for a 10 an over required rate that they found effortless.
Hopefully, as I say, the limited overs nature of the game may get forgotten, and Speedo will be restored to batting hero for his dogged 1 not out.
