MATCH DRAWN
THE LATEST MISSIVE FROM MOSTYN
As told to Mostyn Saxby by a Kafooto tribesman in the Namib on the occasion of his 80th birthday (Mostyn’s, not the tribesman, he was 158 not out!):
On a rare visit to the north of London; not to be confused with North London as is often the case among sailors; the RNVR CC pub-lunched and then took on their hosts, Hit or Miss, at the quaint pastime of cricket.
To get things under way...
Vice-captain Vacher announced with an ingratiating and genuinely enthusiastic smile that the RNVR will be batting first on the greenest of green wickets. However, it soon became evident that the top order had enjoyed their lunch rather too much, soon subsiding to 15/4. A period of consolidation followed with special guest star Mr Delaney and Massey, J. steadying the ship until James was dismissed by the twelfth ball of a yipps affected over which served to strain umpire Hardman's mental faculties to the extent that he asked to be replaced shortly after, (must have been counting into double figures that did it! - ed).
Delaney departed on 39 after some wonderfully clean hitting to a very decent catch in the deep leaving the Steadfast Mr Ferguson to shepherd the tail. The Nice Mr Speedman gave a sparkling display of playing off the front foot, driving so well in fact that he is considering buying his own car, (Mr Charles Crichton of Clapham would enjoy his drives back to town so much more as his regular passenger is now recognised as the second fully paid up member of the chuntering classes within the RNVR's ranks!) on his way to 24 not out. Fergie was the last man out after scoring a crucial 52 runs to nudge the total upto 188 and respectability.
And in reply...
To open the bowling skipper-for-the-day-Piers turned to the redoubtable Major Liddell (Ret)(not to be confused with Major Boonstra of the more celebrated Bermudian regiment [elbow beach brigade] - another on the day for the primary club - ed) and Mr Delaney, the former contributing an early wicket, but the Hit or Miss batsmen certainly did more of the former, steadily cruising to 100/1. The Nice Mr Speedman (now also known as The Man of Speed among the crossword cognoscenti of EC1) settled into one of his customary long spells and probed away, initially without luck until he at last took on board the RNVR necessity of bowling at the stumps and returned figures of 4/21. The scoring rate had been steadily falling away thanks to sterling work in the field and was dealt a funeral blow by an inspired piece of captaincy.
Messers Crichton and Hardman, purveyors of the finest quality filth since 1970, were brought on to impart proceedings with the desired degree of levity. The man also known to some as Mr Char-We Wonton of Zhongxshen Province, pulled the pins and his hand grenades beat the defences of two hapless souls and a further unfortunate was trapped in front to give the RNVR's third favourite Scotsman 3/22.
Time ran out for Hit or Miss and at 163/8 all repaired across the road for more hospitality.
So, VC-PV maintains the happy record of vice-captains avoiding defeat and a good time was had by all. Well done indeed!
As an aside, a cautionary tale to those members who bring relatives or acquaintances to matches (just wait until you hear about Teddington! - ed).
Major Liddell (Ret) had relatives in attendance, and after his unfortunate dismissal without troubling the scorers, his grandfather was heard to ask the question, 'I thought the best batsman went in at 3?!' Later on his grandmother was asked by Anthony's just arrived mother how he had fared with the bat and received the reply, 'oh, he's been out for ages...' Happily for all concerned, the Major's day improved immeasurably when he took the first wicket to fall; this was noticed by his supporters; a cheer went up and the broadest of smiles crept onto his face... (as broad as his chest - not likely - ed)
