Cookham Dean win by 2 wkts

From our own 'Special' Correspondent Mostyn Saxby

Sunday 23rd May 2010, 13:30 hrs (ish), in a field above Cookham Dean.

The merciless sun beat down, the air was still, birds of prey circled overhead and plucky Skipper Ford strode out to solemnly discharge his duty. In a sight to stir the hearts of several Englishman and even a few Scots, he signalled that we were batting to much rejoicing all round.

First out to face the initial salvoes for the RNVR were Massey and Hardman (not to be confused with the well regarded south coast drag artistes of the same names). After ten gritty overs of tight bowling the score having been not very many for nought became not very many for 1 as Hardman's off stump was fatally 'feng shuied' by an inswinging yorker.

Rupert 'The Vice' Vaughan entered the fray. Smoting his customary lusty blows, he adroitly picked out the fielders but finally started to move the innings along apace, with Massey (perhaps having settled too comfortably into his new Lib-Con lifestyle), joining in as the bowlers tired and erred.

It was only as this fruitful partnership homed in on the 200 run mark that it was finally broken, Massey falling for a well constructed 87 and The Vice following shortly after for a lusty 94 to close the innings a touch prematurely on 211/3. Saline drips were the order of the day at tea...

Lead onto the field after a rousing pep talk by their inspirational leader (and coincidentally, quite brilliant keeper), the RNVR cut quite a dash resplendent in their new caps. Invoking a little known 18th century rubric, the new ball would be taken after several overs, the precise number seemingly determined by an esoteric equation, the variable factors of which are the local background radiation count, mean cap size (imperial) of the new head gear and the specific heat capacity (saturated) of Skipper Ford's bandana...the upshot of all this was that the fearsome spin-twins, Dale and Massey 'Junior' opened the bowling.

The slow but steady momentum of the opening partnership was finally broken when Junior twirled his arm and Mr Charles Crichton Esq. of Clapham took what has since been described in some quarters as the 'finest catch this seen this side of the Darien Gap', a quite stunning piece of fielding inches off the ground which caused our scorer to fall off his seat...

After worthy efforts from Hayward and Richards the Nice Mr Speedman was brought on at Nth change to open his outdoor bowling account for the season. After finally forgoing the joys of 'league' cricket and throwing his lot in with the RNVR there was much anticipation as the man variously described as 'le chat très rapide', 'le chat avec plus de grande vitesse' and 'le chat est encore plus rapdide qu'avant', commenced his campaign against The Left-Hander...

Runs were scored (some more convincing than others), pleasantries were exchanged, balls were left and finally the wickets began to fall...the stumps were broken, pads were wrapped and catches were taken (including another piece of sublime brilliance from Crichton). In a masterful display which lasted fully 13 overs, Speedo finished with well deserved figures of 6-47. At the other end Dale finally had just reward with a wicket and even Anthony 'Mythykos' Massey (he bowls too don't you know), was brought on to keep things tight. The Left Hander finally having been dismissed for 89, the scored board was still ticking over and the remaining overs becoming scarcer as the lower order did their bit.

In a terrible twist of fate, Charles 'the cat' Crichton was unable to hold onto what would have been his third superb catch and not for want of trying; in fact his final deed of derring-do, damaged his digit, discouraging further dexterity.

Somehow this foreshadowed the end of the game as the RNVR couldn't quite finish the task on this sultry day and lost by 2 wickets in the penultimate over. Cricket can be a very cruel game indeed.

A good team effort all in all with some outstanding personal contributions and the odd sacrifice to boot.

As a postscript, please spare a thought for Charles who is in a Swiss clinic on top of an alp undergoing treatment on his broken finger in a hyperbaric chamber under the personal supervision of our very own club physician...

Postscript 2020: The second wicket partnership is the club's all time record.
