COOKHAM DEAN WON BY 5 WKTS
Dales, Gales but No Twist to this Tale
A cold coming we had of it, just the worst time of the year for a journey to Cookham Dean. After an opening-day victory noted for its efficiency – and remarkable absence of dropped catches – spirits were high for our trip to the bustling metropolis of Maidenhead.
Exposed on the Spartan hillside, stand-in skipper Senior took the whistling wind as an invitation to bat, leading his men over the top perhaps in hope more than expectation. Chugging to the middle came our Massey-Ferguson opening pair, who saw off tight opening overs before falling in the space of three balls from a bowler fired up by his captain’s insistence that he bowl up the hill, into the wind, whilst the 6’6” powderpuff floated down his own in-duckers with the assistance of a 50mph tailwind.
The middle order swiftly followed the path to the pavilion before the innings was rehabilitated at the clinic of Skipper ‘Betty’ Ford, partnered by Ranu and Hayward to take advantage of Cookham’s ‘change’ bowlers. Ford’s self-declared soixante-neuf (keys in the pot…) led the side to a near-respectable 195, a total some thought to be defendable with the batsmen’s eyes rooted to the demise of tangerine dreams on Survival Sunday – but which others suspected may be fifty short.
And so it came to pass that the bat-wielding children of East Horsley were replaced by helmeted twenty-somethings intent on destruction and the odd nudge down the hill. Rotating the seamers from the pavilion end brought little reward, and only Dale – bowling into the gale – posed a live threat to the batsmen, with a probing line aided by variable bounce and rewarded by three well-earned wickets. Speedman and Ranu bowled accurately from the other end whilst Hayward and Massey struggled for rhythm. The Cookham Dean batsmen made steady progress towards their target and only the sight of the 'Finisher' warming up on the long-leg boundary prompted an acceleration, and the game was soon wrapped up with a poke through the off side. The respite from the gale – and, of course, for Dale – was overdue, and a fine IPA settled the synapses after a disappointing day. Onwards and upwards, though, towards hopes of a better – and less windy – day.
