Banstead CC v RNVR Cricket Club on Sun 10 Jun 2012 at 14:00
RNVR Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Banstead vs. RNVR 11th June 2012
Banstead 114 all out (Speedman 3-10, Atif 3-28)
RNVR 117-2 (Ferguson 41)
RNVR WIN BY 8 WICKETS
Massive Hangover, Tiny Temper
It always seems to rain at Banstead, particularly after some sort of a start and in this wettest of wet English summers today was to prove no exception. Except for half of the RNVR, who hung over as hell hardly noticed the rain given their thumping headaches after a day at Egbaston during the third ‘pointless Test’ against the Windies and Tino Best breaking records.
We took to the field with 8, Crichton and Speedman lost in a hazy fog of their own making and Massey Senior, well late on route from said Brum (though he drives about as fast as he bowls – ed). ‘Test match Ted’ therefore took the new ball. Now pace and carry (as opposed to cash and carry or Hale and Pace) is not something one would normally associate with the RNVR but this was rather different. Resembling a rather large and muscled ‘white rapper ‘ in his black trainers he proceeded to try and bounce out the Banstead top order. For ‘Tiny Temper’ substitute ‘Massive Temper’. During all this ducking, rapping and diving Atif took 3 wickets from the other end.
We were then 11 though one would hardly have noticed except for the overpowering smell of Gin from the outfield mixed in with the faint smell of Jalfreze. RNVR’s very own Massive Temper then replaced the rapper with the same name and proceeded to stifle Banstead’s middle order. Were it not for a slightly blind umpire and some comedy cricket from another comedy duo, the chuckle brothers, Dan and Junior, at slip and gully (to you, to me - ed) the innings would have been over a lot earlier and much earlier had this skipper not let his opposite number bat twice after getting a jaffer from Speedman. Hamish was exceptional in the field (well I am his Dad - ed) and bowled one brilliant over whilst Matt bowled a few overs of leg spin, ‘too hungover to bowl junior’ beamed a few down and Charlie bowled a few grenades through his own battlefield fog (I say ‘bowled’ very loosely here). Senior finished off the England ‘over 70’ with his quicker ball and had he driven as quickly as that from the Midlands would have got here a day earlier.
