Naivety and Ninian (Kids and Old Men)
Having awoken to find that the heat-wave had somewhat disappeared the annual Rottingdean swim did not quite hold the allure of previous years. The Crichtons did however decide to brave the sea, Edward braving rather more than that by opting to change in the public lavatories having put the President on George Michael Speedo alert!
By the time the team assembled at The Plough, buoyed by the arrival of Bertie and two ringers from the previous days game at Ditchling, Doug and John, the drizzle had turned to rather more persistent rain and the prospect of a 2pm start was looking less likely. Ninian therefore tucked into his pre-match garlic bread and Juju obviously felt the breakfast at Shutters B&B insufficient judging by the size of his ciabatta.
We arrived at the rather windswept bowl to find the sight screens blown over but the earlier rain receded and play was soon underway. Not before George Ledden had had to explain to one of the young openers the concept of declaration cricket. “It brings the draw into play” he muttered in a rather downcast voice (when have RNVR ever played for the draw?!).
Speedo opened from the sea end with his usual nagging line and length and quickly had said young opener caught juggled and snatched at, in the gully, by Dale MacGregor (no really)! Post this aberration, normal service was resumed, Speedman tying up one end whilst Hayward toiled with the bowl from the other before skipper Vaughan saw fit to play his joker early. Miskin was brought into the action with devastating effect soon removing the other opener and triggering what was only to prove a mini collapse as he and Speedo did for numbers 4 and 5. Ominously this solely served to bring George Ledden to the crease, and his partnership with Shep who’d found his rhythm by now started to build. Time for another lesson for Mr Ford in the art of captaincy, as Skipper Vaughan decided to bring on RNVR’s youth policy and returning to the scene of his previous heroics the Cidre Monster didn’t disappoint having Shepherd caught at square leg by Staples for 74. From the other end the skipper decided it was time for age and experience, a young voice from the boundary was heard to say “Oh not him, I’ve played against him before. He’s an awful bowler!”. George turned to Fordy to predict his downfall and sure enough was stumped two balls later. An additional rush of blood brought Ninian his second wicket, but any ideas he had of mopping up the tail were halted by the weather, a generous declaration from Dorian Ledden at 188-7 after 30.4 overs and an early tea.
The downpour before tea served to liven the strip up as Ditchling’s RNVR’s openers were about to find out. Again the skipper had opted for youth and experience. Experience was out for a fourth ball duck to one that “kept low and inside edged onto the stumps” according to batsman Ford, “missed a straight one and was bowled through the gate” according to umpire MacGregor! Post-runs at Ditchling, CC was elevated to nose-bleed territory, never a good option. As ever with RNVR ringers, they don’t tend to perform as well for us as against us. Just as Doug was beginning to find his touch he offered up a catch and John’s time at the crease proved short lived too as he offered up the same without troubling the scorers. This brought the skipper to the crease who decided to test Dorian’s reactions in the slips, only to find that the bucket hands still work.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Juju bored observing CC’s pathetic nurdling decided that it was time for some leg side action. A thumping display of boundaries helped to accelerate the rate and convince CC to come to the party, not as accomplished as his partner, a swing and a miss ended up in fly slip’s hands! This brought Hayward to the fore and fresh from his clean hitting at Ditchling he was keen not to be out done by Staples. This partnership brought RNVR back into the game. When Juju missed a straight one and Edward came to wicket the gung ho RNVR batting attack was very much alive and kicking. Another quick cameo of clean hitting from Ed was brought to an abrupt end and although runs were coming wickets were still falling. Enter Jonathan, if ever there was a man to fend off defeat surely he was it. He held his stance post his first glorious cover drive, admired himself, rose and nonchalantly leant back on his bat. A muttering was heard from the slips “It’s the Great White Hunter. Bring me the tusks!”. This was all too much for Hayward at the other end who obliged Dorian by giving him his second catch in the slips and departing just shy of his fifty on 46.
Everything now was left to RNVR’s old men. Overs running out, wickets running low and runs required, what was to be the game plan? George keen to get in on the act, bullied his way into the slips pushing his father out of the way only to drop the inevitable catch, prompting his father to reveal that he was in fact adopted! Bertie played sensibly bringing the draw into the equation, however departed in the penultimate over bringing Ninian to the crease. One over to go, 22 runs required Ninian on strike….
A big heave ho, another edge, Harris had his sixth wicket, game over.
After drinks at the clubhouse we returned to Shutters B&B, Ninian having bought the Hurstpierpoint Chinese takeaway out of duck. Not a good omen with two losses from two games on tour.
