What was that, pretty boy?
32 degree heat + an absolute road + win the toss = bowling first?!?
That wasn't the start we had hoped for, but unfortunately South Nutfield had told half their team to arrive late andturned up with 7 men, so inevitably we had to put them in. A solid start coupled with a few loose shots saw two early wickets fall and with the opposition still lacking in numbers, it looked like we might make it back in time for Antiques Roadshow.
That was until their Number 4 strode to the crease and smashed the red to all corners. The over rate slowed to an excruciating pace, owing to the fact that we were spending three balls an over scanning the forest floor for the now egg-shaped corky. The third wicket partnership was eventually broken, but it was little more than a consolation, and brought the lead singer of McFly (c 2002) to the crease...my mum
always said if I have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all, so let's move on.
Eventually, the declaration came on 257 (off just 35 overs) with their #4 smashing 130*, incorporating at least 1 x 6 every over for the last 10...#wellbatted
A captain's innings was what we needed and a captain's innings was what we got - despite Crichton falling early, Vaughan replied with some decent hitting of his own. Taylor provided some brief support with 25, before being caught behind (and a minor Stuart Broad moment). That brought Massey Jr to the crease, who provided able support to his captain.
Vaughan eventually fell for 82 (15 fours & 1 six) and was replaced by Dale who continued his recent form with the bat. But despite solid knocks from Massey and Dale (64* and 52* respectively), the draw was soon inevitable.
That said, the final session was not without fireworks. Ex-Crystal Palace Chairman Simon Jordan came into the attack, only to be dispatched for four consecutive boundaries through the covers by Massey. Not to be outdone, Dale then launched David Beckham (c2000) into the next county with a glorious straight six. The bowler took this display of clean-hitting very well and did not once vent his feelings with a few choice words.
So a combined 492 runs for just 6 wickets...not a day for the bowlers.
