Paris to Leigh or Bust
Owners of the old fashioned fixtures card will note members are required to be at the ground at least 20 minutes before the start of play.
For some this can be troublesome, for others downright impossible. Leigh (Kent) has always thrown a spanner in the works for some (names on request) though for some reason Headley this year has made its first appearance in the best selling book, ‘Cricket clubs with similar names – make sure you check your county first before setting off, edition II’. Apparently though, this particular cricketer had a better excuse. He was just pissed (see eyes passim Leigh 2006).
No worries though as his pièce de remplacement had set off from Paris 8 hours before the game and arrived, avant de Vacher en famille at the Dolphin (via Heathrow no less to pick up papas voiture). The offer of lunch tempted few of the players and as is the way now most had the customary pint of Coke (other brands available - ed) ‘sans nourriture’, apparently something to do with being fit and being able to see the ball though I have little evidence this has had any discernable effect on their play. I had a rather good chorizo and scallop salad washed down with 2 pints of Directors.
And so to the game. It was hot – that I remember. Murray also won at Wimbledon for the first time disappearing to the far corners of your TV set, chasing down impossible balls fired from a demonic Serbs’ racket (Mostyn, please comment on the use of gratuitous diacritical’s here). George was late replacing the hitherto mentioned Monsieur ‘Amish’ and proceeded to take 5 wickets for 15 runs, all of them bowled, a feat to be repeated by Massey Senior later on the season (note to bloggers – if you are reading this last sentence before playing in the Lindfield game please ignore this last sentence). Clearly Skippers’ pre-season ‘directiffe’ about bowling at the stumps has been read by everybody except the person it was intended for (motivational speech for afore mentioned anonym on request).Leigh therefore went from a very promising 70-1 to 186 all out, which clearly wasn’t enough.
In reply, somebody got a fifty I think but I don’t know who it was as I was watching the tennis (can’t have been George though - pissed up with 5 wickets and a 50 – you're kidding me). Never mind, we won (again) with something to spare (at least 5 balls) and I even got to bat with the Captain who was grinning like a Cheshire Cat. I think this was because he thought he was going to get more than ten victories for the season (note to Captain – if you are reading this last sentence before playing in the Lindfield game, bad luck).
