A Vintage Spring Day: Rain 1 RNVR 0

After last week’s elation it was a rather cold come back down to Earth for the RNVR this week.

It started out as a truly vintage English spring day. The sun was out. The birds were singing. And the team were ready with their sunglasses aplenty. As the skip won the toss and elected to bat first, it couldn’t have started better. Tiger Tim sent the ball to all corners early on, but after he fell attempting a pull off St. Albans eager opening bowler (who managed a casual 15-over spell), the wheels slowly started to come off the wagon.

First the weather decided to go against us. The rain started to come down and the temperature dropped. Good ol’ April showers in May. As the battle-hardened supporters started to head for the covers, so did our batting (or into the hands of cover to be more exact). Fergie finally succumbed to the opposition’s sledging, and Bill and Charlie fell shortly after that. Despite some middle order resistance from Bridges, Vaughan, Massey and Atif (with some late blows), the RNVR finally fell for 154 all out.

Fair to say there were some catches of a rather higher quality than we were normally used to.

As the team attempted to re-group at the interval by tucking into some jam doughnuts, the biggest worry turned to how many jumpers we could wear in the field as we began to add jumper’s no.2 and 3 on in an attempt to combat the cold. We were joined on the field by some fellow in an opposition sweater (or was that Charlie?) who popped up at backward point, needless to say, we could’ve done with some extra fielders. St. Albans started confidently and started to pepper the boundary with some forceful shots. Happy Days responded with two brute Yorkers that would’ve made Dale Steyn proud. Both openers back in the hutch. Game on.

Unfortunately, despite our pleading with the umps to call “rain stopped play”, we persevered on in the field and against the biting rain. A couple of spills here and there, and despite a couple more wickets, including the overseas to our skip’s fine “off” spin, our score was surpassed shortly before the 24th over for 4 down.

Nevertheless it was a valuable performance, and good to get some time out in the middle in some “testing conditions”. Here’s to a summer of good British weather.
